Question: Why didn’t Imam Hussain (PBUH) pray for it to rain when he was banned from drinking water in Ashura?
Answer: According to Shia quotations, Imam Hussain’s prayer would not only be granted about raining, but if he also prayed for his victory and triumph, it would have definitely been granted as well. But:
1. Imam Hussain (PBUH) wanted to show to all Muslims, in Karbala, that we should submit to god’s will and to teach people the practical lesson of submission to lord.
2. Imam Hussain’s intention was not to use unconventional means in the story of Ashura in order for it to be another lesson for Muslims and to show the duty of those who are unable to use unconventional means against tyranny and oppression.
3. According to quotations, Imam Hussain (PBUH) in the story of Ashura, declined the desires of angels and jinns to help him and submit himself to divine providence. It caused the ultimate oppression on Imam Hussain (PBUH) and hence, in such times that broadcasting mediums were limited, the news of his martyrdom spread quickly.
